“Valdemar Atterdag Collecting Tribute from the People of Visby, 1361,” 1882
K. G. Hellqvist’s 1882 historical painting takes us to the Swedish island of Gotland in 1361. The wealthy trading city of Visby had become the target of Danish King Valdemar IV Atterdag. Local farmers tried to resist the invaders outside the city walls, but they were poorly armed—and betrayed when the townspeople shut the gates against them. The farmers were crushed, and half the island’s male population was killed.
To save their lives, the terrified people of Visby agreed to pay an enormous ransom. Hellqvist captures the grim moment of its collection: three huge barrels stand in the town square, and the people are ordered to fill them to the brim with gold. King Valdemar lounges on a raised platform, while a ruined local family stands frozen in the foreground. Their silent fury and tears convey the full tragedy of a city brought to its knees.
