Vincent van Gogh
Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe, 1889

Van Gogh’s ear: madness or a cry for help?

On December 23, 1888, Gauguin left their shared studio—ending their artistic collaboration. That same day, Vincent learned of brother Theo’s engagement. Theo was his only confidant, financial lifeline, and emotional anchor. Fearing abandonment, Vincent suffered a breakdown. Cutting off his ear transformed inner agony into visible pain—an unconscious plea to be seen.

It worked. Theo rushed from Paris to his side, reaffirming love and support.

Pain became Vincent’s language when words failed. 🎨💔 #ArtHistory #VanGogh #MentalHealth
