Salvador Dali
"Face of War", 1940

"Face of War" is one of the rare Dali works with little room for interpretation. Given the circumstances of its creation, it's hard to imagine the painting turning out any other way.

When World War II reached Paris—where Dali lived and worked with his wife, Gala—the fall of France in 1940 forced the couple to flee across the Atlantic to the United States. According to legend, Dali began painting this piece during the journey, driven to capture the horror and absurdity consuming Europe.

His symbols here are stark and unmistakable: writhing snakes and multiplying skulls fill the empty eye sockets and the silent, agonized mouth, twisted in torment. The lifeless, grotesque face of war rests on the sand of an endless desert, surrounded only by jagged rocks.

In the lower right corner, Dali left a handprint—his mark of presence, a quiet testament to his empathy and witness.
