Edwin Landseer
"Valor and Defiance", 1839
Here’s a true Victorian sensation! Pharmacist Jacob Bell commissioned his artist friend to paint a portrait of his beloved dogs: the noble bloodhound Grafton and the scruffy terrier Scratch. Instead of a formal aristocratic scene, Landseer turned the canvas into a bold parody of grand Dutch portraiture. Rather than a dignified nobleman, a massive dog paw casually drapes from the window frame.
The ironic contrast of their personalities instantly captivated London, and prints soon adorned countless homes. Few knew the drama behind the scenes—noble Grafton barely survived a vicious midnight brawl in the stables with another dog, leaving walls splattered with blood. But all was well in the end, and on canvas, he remains the picture of calm composure.
