Marianne von Werefkin, a key figure in German Expressionism and the Neue Künstlervereinigung München, hosted one of Munich’s most vibrant artistic salons, shaping radical ideas alongside Kandinsky and Jawlensky. Rejecting realism, she crafted a deeply emotional, mystical visual language—transforming everyday scenes into philosophical reflections on life.

Her painting *Styx* (1910–1911) depicts laborers hauling sacks along a river, reimagined as a mythic journey. Named after the river of the dead in Greek myth, the scene evokes fate and suffering. Stark black outlines dehumanize the figures, while jarring, unnatural colors intensify the mood of dread. A landmark of early Expressionism, *Styx* captures the soul’s weight in a fractured world.
