Anatomical mystery: what cardiologists discovered on David’s neck
Few realize that Michelangelo’s iconic David (1501–1504) holds a secret only uncovered by cardiologists over 500 years later. On the right side of the statue’s neck, the jugular vein is clearly distended—a detail invisible under normal conditions. The master sculpted this with precision to convey David’s intense tension, fear, and surge of adrenaline moments before facing Goliath.
What’s astonishing? Michelangelo captured this physiological sign 124 years before the circulation system was even scientifically described. He secretly dissected cadavers in a monastery, allowing his art to outpace medical science by centuries. Today, this observation is recognized in medicine as the David Sign.
