Diving for Gold
The Philippines is considered one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries. About 20 storms and typhoons batter it each year. Also, the archipelago lies in the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire,’ where many volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.
Although the locals live in extreme conditions, they can hardly leave the place. The job market is utterly poor. One of the very few opportunities for making money is diving for gold in the local Klondike. The workers face immense risks to their lives when diving: ‘We saw a man who hit his head on a rock and died,’ says one of the gold prospectors in the Philippines.
The inherent risks of the work have not stopped people as they can earn at least some money, enough for a daily serving of food. A common dream for all of the workers is to save something for their children’s education, so they don’t have the same fate as their parents.
