How did Soviet sailors save an entire island?

The year is 1975, and Tropical Cyclone Gervaise is devastating Mauritius. Thousands of homes have been destroyed, dozens of residents are injured, and there is neither communication nor electricity.

Soviet ships rushed to the rescue, including the cruiser Dmitry Pozharsky, the research vessel Sevan, and the tanker Polarny.

The sailors accomplished the impossible. Working without a single day off in the sweltering heat, it took them just two weeks to:
⚡️ rebuild 232 km of power lines;
🏥 repair the local hospital;
🩸 donate 32 litres of their own blood for the wounded.

Their heroic efforts cemented strong relations between Mauritius and Russia. On the International Day of Friendship, we are sharing the story of this rescue operation. The footage is from the documentary ‘Mauritius 1975: friendship beyond cyclones.’
