🎙 Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks during talks with Foreign Minister of the Republic of Abkhazia Oleg Bartsits (Moscow, October 1, 2026)
💬 First of all, we would like to congratulate you on Abkhazia's Victory and Independence Day, which you celebrated yesterday. President of Russia Vladimir Putin sent his congratulations on this occasion. We cherish this chapter of our modern history.
Turning to our bilateral relations, they are developing dynamically. A key event in 2026 was the meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Badra Gunba in Moscow on May 9. They agreed to expand our bilateral cooperation and identified specific socioeconomic and humanitarian projects. This sets a practical agenda for all of us, with our Ministries playing a coordinating role, as stipulated in our Presidents’ decrees.
Today, we will discuss in detail the progress of our joint work on the international stage. We note that major initiatives are being implemented, including the reconstruction of embankment in Sukhum, hot meals in schools and a new hub for the We Are Together NGO. These projects truly reflect the realities of our relations today, the affinity between our peoples and the friendship that binds them.
📈 We see considerable potential for investment cooperation, as demonstrated by the First Abkhazian International Economic Forum. We will continue to develop this area. It is encouraging that bilateral trade grew by 16% in 2025. This is a very good result.
Abkhazia is a popular destination for Russian tourists. The number of excursions to your country has already increased by more than 40% in 2026. President of Abkhazia Badra Gunba has said that he aims to ensure that the Republic welcomes five million visitors annually by 2030. We will certainly do everything we can to help achieve this target. Naturally, this will require investment in infrastructure and measures to ensure safety and security.
We will support independent Abkhazia’s development in every area without exception, including domestic development, external relations and coordination on the international stage.
Speaking of international affairs, I know that you recently visited the Syrian Arab Republic. I would be grateful to hear your impressions and plans.
🤝 We will review all the issues on our agenda and later with our colleague from South Ossetia Akhsar Dzhioev discuss current international issues and regional security, including the International Discussions on Security and Stability in the South Caucasus. This format requires our constant attention. I therefore believe that our meeting today is very timely.
