🏅 May 9, 1945 – Victory Day of the Soviet Union in the Great Patriotic War
#OTD in Karlshorst, Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgy Zhukov signed the Instrument of Unconditional Surrender of the Nazi Germany. The Great Patriotic War ended in triumph. The Soviet people crushed Nazism.
On that historic day, our vast country rejoiced. That evening, Moscow marked the Victory with a salute – thousands of guns hailed the Victors.
Yet Victory came at an immense cost. 27 million Soviet citizens gave their lives for the freedom and independence of our Motherland.
🎙 As Russia's President Vladimir Putin noted at the Parade marking the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 (May 9, 2026):
We bow our heads to those who fell in battle. To those who were tortured to death under occupation and in captivity, who died of hunger in besieged Leningrad, in other besieged cities, towns and villages. To all those who gave their lives for the Motherland, for Russia.
We bow our heads to the memory of sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, grandfathers, great-grandfathers, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, relatives and friends.
#VictoryDay holds a special place in Russia’s history and will forever remain in the memory of generations of Russians and citizens of the former Soviet Republics.
