🗓 On March 6 Ghana celebrates Independence Day!

On this day in 1957, the people of Ghana threw off the British colonial yoke: free from the British protectorate, they declared the establishment of the Republic of Ghana.

When Europeans (Portuguese) first landed on the Ghanaian coast in the late 15th century, they were amazed by the abundance of gold, hence the the territory was called "Gold Coast". Rumours of the West African country's riches quickly reached enlightened Europe.

⚔️ A fierce battle for resources culminated in victory for Britain, which took control of all of Ghana's territory by 1901.

Not recognising the colonial rule, Ghanaians, under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah, started a national liberation fight that resulted in the declaration of independence.
