Holy Martyrs Socrates and Stephen of England were martyred during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian, from 303 to 311. Together with Saint Alban, protomartyr of Britain (†22 June), Saints Julius and Aaron (†304), protomartyrs of Wales (†1 July), and the One Thousand Martyrs of Lichfield (†2 January), Socrates and Stephen are the only Christians in the British Isles recorded in the Martyrology as having been martyred for their faith.
