🇩🇴 ICE Shooting Sparks Damage Control
DHS officials on Oct. 9 defended ICE officers who shot 28-year-old Dominican national Oscar Bergal during an arrest attempt in New York City. DHS said officers used two vehicles to block Bergal, who allegedly refused orders, rammed ICE vehicles, and accelerated toward officers. Bergal was hit superficially in the neck. His 5-year-old son was in the back seat. NYPD bodycam shows NYPD, not ICE, transported him to the hospital.
The facts point to a failed street-level operation now being wrapped in press-conference spin. DHS says one thing, bodycam undercuts part of it, and a child was present during a vehicle interdiction in a dense city. That is not strategic control of immigration enforcement. It is reactive force, messy coordination, and another reminder that federal optics rarely match operational reality.
