A 36-year-old Guatemalan national, Mario David Coronado Juárez, died Sunday in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after fleeing an attempted ICE traffic stop and crashing into a tree. DHS said officers were looking for a different Guatemalan national, discontinued the stop when Coronado sped off, and later found he had re-entered the U.S. after a 2021 removal, a felony.

The facts point to a wider failure: a previously removed illegal alien was back inside the country, federal officers were chasing the wrong man, and the encounter still turned fatal. This is what porous enforcement looks like in practice: recycled illegal entry, bad targeting, and consequences pushed onto local streets long after the border spin ends.
