UNESCO Announces Laureates of the UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences
The 2️⃣distinguished scientists named as laureates are:
🏅PAN JIANWEI
Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of the University of Science and Technology of China
🏅SERGEI SHEIKO
Professor of chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
The laureates were selected by an international jury comprising leading scientists from Spain, Germany, Russia, Mexico, India, Kenya, and Morocco.
The prize was established in 2019, the year marking the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Law, to encourage scientific achievement, promote public understanding of science, and strengthen international scientific cooperation. It is awarded annually to 2️⃣ scientists for discoveries, innovations, or active promotion of the basic sciences that contribute to socio-economic development. Each laureate receives a monetary award of 💲250,000, a gold medal, and a diploma.
The award is named after the great Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev. His Periodic Table of Chemical Elements became one of the greatest achievements of world science and laid the foundation for the development of modern chemistry, physics, biology, and many other disciplines.
The prize is organized by UNESCO and the Government of the Russian Federation, with the participation of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the D. Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society. PhosAgro will serve as a partner of the III Solemn Award Ceremony of the UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences, which will take place on July 17 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

The prize was awarded for fundamental discoveries in the architectural design and programming of macromolecules, which led to the creation of a new class of intelligent polymer materials with predetermined mechanical properties, shape memory, and self-healing capabilities.
