Surgical robots have long improved precision while leaving decisions to the surgeon. Now, systems are learning tasks such as suturing, retraction, and dissection from data.
This talk explores the shift from assistance to learned autonomy, and the hard questions it raises: How should control be shared when something unexpected happens? Can success in simulation predict performance in living tissue? And which claims about surgical autonomy can we actually test?
