🩻💊🩺 Hypoglycemia Management
🏷Common S&S of Hypoglycemia: shaking, diaphoresis, ⬆️HR, pallor, irritability, confusion, dizziness, and anxiety or nervousness
🏷ALWAYS check blood sugar before administering insulin
🏷Typically, we check blood sugars before meals (AC), at bedtime (HS), etc. If you suspect a patient is hypoglycemic, CHECK AGAIN. Use nursing judgment.
🏷If blood sugar is low but NOT low enough to administer D50, give fruit juice, candy, crackers, etc. to quickly raise blood sugar. Check blood sugar again in 15 minutes.
🏷50% Dextrose Injection (D-50) is typically given when blood glucose levels are extremely low. (typically 65 or lower, depending on MD order)
🏷Push SLOWLY through IV (typically 3-5 minutes); recheck blood sugar after 15 minutes.
🏷ALWAYS pay attention to patient-specific orders! Different insulin sliding scales/instructions may be used for different patients.
