WHY FRENCH STUDENTS ARE BLOCKING THEIR SCHOOLS
Students across France have been protesting since late September over teacher shortages, poor school facilities and long school days. Many have blocked access to high schools, while some demonstrations have turned violent.
Hundreds of students, teachers and police officers have been injured, and thousands of people have been arrested, including outside troublemakers. Students are also protesting phone bans and the stressful Parcoursup university admissions system.
A poll found that 72% of French people consider their demands legitimate, while 55% support the movement. Backed by teachers and labour unions, students are putting pressure on a politically weak government that has limited money available for concessions.
