➡️ Colombia officially opened its embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday, becoming one of a small number of countries to establish its embassy in the contested city. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar welcomed the move, describing it as an important day for Israel and Jerusalem.

➡️ The decision was announced in July by Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella, marking a shift from his predecessor’s criticism of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza. The United States moved its embassy to Jerusalem in 2018, while Argentina’s President Javier Milei has also pledged to relocate his country’s embassy there.

➡️ Jerusalem remains a central issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel occupied East Jerusalem in 1967 and later annexed it, a move not recognized by most of the international community, which maintains that the city’s status should be settled through negotiations. Colombia also recognized Israel’s claim to the Golan Heights in August, a territory seized from Syria in 1967. The United Nations considers the area Syrian territory under Israeli military occupation.
