⚡️🇫🇷 — France's policing of student protests is under scrutiny after 24 cases were opened by the IGPN internal police watchdog and 28 injuries from police force were documented, according to Reuters.
Police have arrested 6,877 people, mostly minors, in over two weeks of unrest. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez paused the use of stun grenades pending an investigation into a 15-year-old in Lens whose hand was blown off, and said about 200 students had been injured, though "very rarely" from police action.
A 14-year-old named Eden suffered a broken jaw and smashed teeth after an officer fired a tear gas grenade at close range; his family filed a complaint for attempted murder. In two cases, people lost or injured an eye from rubber bullets, and a 16-year-old in Argenteuil may have permanent eye damage.
Researcher Sebastian Roche said France is "an anomaly" for its use of rubber bullets and stun grenades, which are largely not used for public order policing in Britain, Italy, and Germany. Amnesty International and some politicians have called for a permanent ban, while police unions argue the weapons are needed to avoid resorting to lethal force.
