⚡️🇺🇸🇷🇺 — U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly backed an initiative proposed months ago by his envoy John Coale to ease some U.S. sanctions on Russia in exchange for Moscow releasing a number of prisoners, according to The Atlantic.

The plan remains at an early stage and had not previously been reported; it is intended to facilitate U.S.-Russian deals involving Russian oil, diesel, rare-earth minerals and other commodities.

➡️ Coale, who has been testing the same approach in Belarus, said he decided to apply it to Russia after securing Trump’s approval and plans to coordinate the effort with Steve Witkoff. «All this stuff works toward the possibility of peace,» Coale told The Atlantic, adding that greater interaction and economic or prisoner-related trade-offs could move the parties «step by step toward, hopefully, peace» and that «economic ties usually result in normalization.»

The outlet assessed that the approach would likely provoke opposition from Ukrainians, Europeans and many of Trump’s allies in Congress.
