U.S.-Chinese negotiators agreed in Geneva in May 2025 to a 90-day truce reducing U.S. tariffs to 30% and Chinese tariffs to 10%, later extended for another 90 days in August, while a tentative October 2025 agreement reached in South Korea reportedly included Chinese commitments on fentanyl precursors, U.S. soybean purchases and rare-earth export restrictions in exchange for further U.S. tariff reductions.
