⚡️🇷🇺🇩🇪 — On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held his first meeting with Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in 4.5 years, with the two last meeting on January 18, 2022.

Ahead of the meeting, the German side requested restricted media access and that the opening remarks not be recorded, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. The meeting lasted just over 20 minutes, according to a TASS correspondent.

➡️ The talks took place against a backdrop of renewed diplomatic tensions between Moscow and Berlin, including reciprocal consular and cultural measures following Germany’s closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin, and Moscow’s subsequent decision to close the German consulate in St. Petersburg; the measures were linked to the dispute over a drone incident in Leipzig, which Russia has denied involvement in.
