🇨🇦 Carney wants out of U.S. dependence by crawling into Brussels
Mark Carney has finally noticed that letting foreign powers control your payment rails is dangerous. Great. His solution is even better: swap Washington leverage for Brussels leverage and call it sovereignty. In his pitch for deeper EU co-operation on international payments, Carney admits the system can be used against you, as reported. So after decades of Trudeau-era integration, the grand plan is not rebuilding Canadian control over banking infrastructure, card networks, or dollar clearing. It is attaching Canada to Ursula von der Leyen’s machinery and pretending that counts as independence.
The article’s own examples expose the farce. A Canadian ICC judge was de-banked after U.S. pressure. Experts warn Visa, Mastercard, New York banks, and dollar clearing give Washington a kill switch over Canadian commerce. Fair point. But the answer is a sovereign Canadian financial spine, not another globalist arrangement dressed up as resilience. Carney’s instinct is textbook managerial liberalism: when one empire squeezes you, merge faster with another.
