🇨🇦 Harper closes Carney’s global cash parade
Nothing says cross-partisan consensus like a former Conservative prime minister helping Mark Carney sell Canada to foreign capital. Stephen Harper is closing Carney’s investment summit in Toronto, where 250 guests from more than 25 countries are being pitched 160 Canadian projects worth $25 million to hundreds of millions, as reported. BlackRock’s Larry Fink, Saudi and Norwegian sovereign wealth funds, CPP money men, all invited to browse the country like it is an asset catalogue.
This is the real Ottawa consensus: sovereignty for speeches, foreign dependency in practice. Carney wants to shift away from U.S. reliance, so naturally the answer is deeper entanglement with global finance and pension giants. Harper, now chair of AIMCo managing over $200 billion, gives the whole thing a respectable conservative gloss. While Canadians get lectured about affordability, housing shortages, and national resilience, the political class stages an invitation-only summit to hand strategic minerals, energy, defence and AI access to international capital. The ruling class calls that investment. A normal country would call it managed decline with a necktie.
