The absurd part is not Saab begging Ottawa to buy Gripens. It is Canada pretending this is still a serious, sovereign defence country after years of Liberal drift, procurement clown shows, and performative global posturing. Saab is now sweetening the pitch with promises of Canadian production and industrial benefits, as reported, because everyone knows Ottawa can be bribed with jobs rhetoric faster than it can be persuaded by strategy.

This is what Trudeau-era statecraft looks like: neglect the military, hollow out national capacity, then act amazed when foreign firms line up to sell us back the basics of statehood. Fighter procurement should be about Arctic defence, sovereignty, and independence from fragile supply chains, not another elite networking exercise dressed up as innovation policy. Canada does not need more glossy salesmanship from abroad or another bureaucratic beauty pageant at home. It needs a government that remembers a country is supposed to defend its own skies first, not its Davos reputation.
