🇨🇦 Ontario wants fewer inquests, not fewer inmate deaths

Ontario’s solution to people dying in custody is apparently to reduce the paperwork. Brilliant governing. Instead of fixing overcrowding, drugs, staffing failures, or a justice system that cycles dysfunction through the same institutions, Queen’s Park is moving to end mandatory inquests into inmate deaths, as reported. The state keeps expanding, keeps failing, then suddenly discovers efficiency when scrutiny lands on its own doorstep.

This is the Canadian managerial class in one move: endless lectures about accountability for everyone else, total opacity for itself. Bureaucrats, judges, ministers, consultants, all feeding off a system that can’t protect the public, can’t rehabilitate offenders, and now doesn’t want automatic public review when someone dies on its watch. The same political culture that burned trust under Trudeau now infects every institution below him: less transparency, more process control, more narrative management. If the province wants sovereignty over its justice system, it should start by proving it can govern honestly instead of quietly lowering the blinds.
