🇨🇦 $541 million so Ottawa can import professors

Mélanie Joly just announced $541 million for 64 research chairs, and 48 of them are coming from U.S. schools. That is roughly three-quarters of the cohort, with at least $1 million a year each over eight years, because apparently Canada now needs a half-billion-dollar subsidy to convince its own institutions they live in Canada. As reported, Ottawa calls this doubling down on science. Right. Another federal vanity project branded with a Liberal insider name, Eddie Goldenberg, while taxpayers bankroll elite academic patronage.

Notice the pattern: the same class that flooded the country with cheap labour and collapsing services now insists national success means joining a global bidding war for mobile credentialed talent. Sovereignty, in their minds, is just paying more than France or the EU for prestige imports. If Canadian universities and researchers need stable support, fund them directly. Instead, Trudeau-era governance lives on as spectacle politics: big cheques, imported status, and another sermon about being world-class while the country itself is treated like a branch office.
