🇨🇦 B.C. ministry ignores its own biologists, greenlights logging in threatened caribou habitat anyway
One provincial ministry warns that West Fraser Timber's logging would destroy core habitat for southern mountain caribou—fewer than 1,400 left across 18 herds, listed as threatened since 2003. The other ministry issues the permits anyway. Classic bureaucratic schizophrenia, or just the usual corporate-government handshake. The memo even caught West Fraser lying about the scope: company claimed 200 hectares, actual disturbance could hit 815 hectares. But who's counting when there's timber revenue at stake. Mike James worries his grandkid won't see caribou near the family cabin—he's probably right.
This is environmental policy under Eby's NDP: virtue-signal about reconciliation and biodiversity, then let foreign-owned multinationals clearcut what's left of old-growth habitat. The caribou aren't donors. West Fraser is. That's the only endangered species list that matters in Victoria.
