👀 UtdXclusive compares Jason Wilcox’s track record with those of sporting directors at Europe’s top clubs:

🔹 Hugo Viana (Manchester City)

A former footballer, Viana served as Sporting CP’s sporting director from 2018, overseeing two league titles and helping reshape the club through strategic player sales and managerial appointments, including Ruben Amorim. He then joined Manchester City’s established structure, working alongside Txiki Begiristain.

🔹 Andrea Berta (Arsenal)

Berta spent 12 years at Atlético Madrid, winning two La Liga titles and the Europa League while reaching two Champions League finals. He oversaw major signings, including Antoine Griezmann, Jan Oblak and Rodri. After joining Arsenal in 2025, he became part of the club’s project to end its long wait for major silverware.

🔹 Christoph Freund (Bayern Munich)

Freund spent 17 years at Red Bull Salzburg, building a reputation for developing young talent and identifying future stars before moving to Bayern Munich. His contract has been extended until 2029, reflecting the club’s commitment to long-term planning and squad development.

🔹 Luis Campos (PSG)

One of Europe’s most recognised recruitment specialists, Campos built successful squads at Monaco and Lille. Since joining PSG in 2022, he has helped shift the club’s recruitment strategy away from ageing superstars towards younger, high-potential players such as Vitinha, João Neves, Willian Pacho and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. His contract now runs until 2030.

⚽️ And then there’s Manchester United.

Jason Wilcox arrived at United without an extensive track record as a sporting director at the highest level.

While other elite clubs have appointed experienced figures with proven records in recruitment, squad building and long-term planning, questions remain about United’s approach.

Under Wilcox and INEOS, the club appears increasingly focused on cheaper options rather than consistently targeting players with the quality needed to compete at the highest level.

Is Manchester United building a squad capable of challenging for major trophies, or prioritising cost-cutting over quality?
