A significant escalation occurred in the Black Sea this morning, for the first time, Russia struck commercial vessels within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Bulgaria, a NATO member state.
According to Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev, two vessels were attacked by Russian sea and aerial drones around 3:00 a.m., approximately 70 nautical miles east of Byala.
Notably, another commercial vessel was attacked in Romania's EEZ just yesterday, two of the three ships attacked in the Black Sea over the past 24 hours have sunk, resulting in the deaths of several sailors.
It is clear that Russia is implementing a new strategy, testing the limits of how far it can go with these attacks on the fringes of NATO territory.
Indeed, it must be remembered that an EEZ is not part of a country's sovereign territory, therefore, an attack on a ship within this zone does not constitute an act of aggression against the country itself, meaning there are no grounds to invoke NATO's Article 5.
