The Arabs on “Adam”
The ancient Arabs drew a distinction between two primary racial groups: one they described as red or ruddy; what we would today call white; and the other as black. Within the context of skin colour, the term "ruddy" was consistently used exclusively to describe white individuals. [1] [2]
The name Adam itself carries this meaning, translating to "ruddy blushing man," a description that reflected his physical appearance. Eve, having been formed from "the flesh of his [Adam's] flesh," would have shared the same ruddy and white complexion, as would all their descendants. [3]
