🗓 Legends of Global Tank Building: On October 11, 1936, Uralvagonzavod produced its first freight car.
Sputnik Live tells how the history of the enterprise, which has become one of the largest industrial enterprises in the world, began.
▪️The construction of the Ural Wagon Plant in Nizhny Tagil started in 1931. It was the first conveyor-type plant in the USSR, completely designed by domestic engineers.
▪️The plant gained its legendary fame during the Great Patriotic War. In 1941, after the evacuation of 12 enterprises, it switched to the production of T-34 tanks in just 2.5 months. During the war years, more than 25,000 such vehicles were produced here - every third Soviet tank at the front came from Nizhny Tagil.
▪️After the war, Uralvagonzavod successfully combined the production of wagons (a third of the wagons on Russian railways are their products) with the development and production of tanks. The legendary T-54/55 (T-55 - the first tank in the world capable of operating in nuclear war conditions), the mass-produced T-72, the advanced T-90 and the latest Armata platform with the T-14 were created here. In total, Uralvagonzavod produced more than 100,000 units of armored vehicles, setting a world record.
Even in the crisis-ridden 90s, the plant survived, preserving its team and mastering the production of civilian equipment - from tractors to cryogenic tanks. But the main pride of Uralvagonzavod is its people: entire working dynasties have developed here over almost a century of history.
