▪️Former head of the BND, August Hanning, arrested on suspicion of espionage, may have passed information to the Azerbaijani side, Der Spiegel reports, citing sources.
▪️According to investigators, Hanning purchased classified BND documents from a former employee, after which he may have used them to prepare analytical materials for an Azerbaijani intelligence officer.
▪️The investigation also established his contacts with Azerbaijani representatives. Furthermore, the former head of the BND served on the board of the German-Azerbaijani Forum.
▪️Following Der Spiegel's publication, Baku protested to the German Chancellor's Office and the Foreign Ministry through intelligence agencies and diplomatic channels.
The Azerbaijan Media and Broadcasting Council called the publication of materials without citing an official source "unacceptable information manipulation."
