🇷🇺🇺🇸🇨🇳 Russia, the US, and China are entering a race for lunar exploration, with lunar nuclear reactors becoming a key element, according to the NYT

NASA has already requested a reactor from contractors capable of surviving a flight and operating autonomously near the lunar south pole. The Americans expect to have it ready for launch by December 2030.
▪️Russia and China are developing a joint lunar program, with Moscow playing a leading role in the nuclear component of the project. By 2036, Russia plans to build the Selena reactor, designed for ten years of autonomous operation and to power future lunar stations. The NYT notes Russia's experience in this area: the USSR and Russia have launched more than 30 nuclear reactors into orbit, and the country has significant reserves of nuclear fuel suitable for space missions.
➖ "This race is determining the very future of space exploration," the publication writes. Reactors must provide permanent bases with energy independent of sunlight, including for lunar resource exploration and future missions in the solar system.
▪️At the same time, scientists warn of the risk of launch accidents. The US and Russia say the reactors will remain inactive until they reach the moon, which should reduce the risk of a possible rocket failure.
