The philosopher, as Olympiodorus says, seeks death, namely the separation of the soul from the body. This Alexandrian Neoplatonist claims that "preparation for death is not an end in itself... the real goal is being dead. For the same reason 'dying' is different from 'being dead'; the one who seeks purification and prepares himself for death 'dies', in other words, he cleanses himself of the affects, whereas thinking is already 'dead', because it is freed from the affects, and therefore it does not make dying its aim”. To be dead is to be like Osiris, who waits to be united with Ra ba, whose unity in the Duat belongs to the integrated philosophical life. Philosophising in the Osirian underworld necessitates the use of knowledge, which is necessary for the alchemical transformation that is required to become a vindicated and maakheru.
