The modern world has failed to reconcile individual freedom with legitimate social authority in the proper balance, and therefore it has been condemned to oscillate between anarchy and despotism. Our times are precisely witnessing how the broad freedoms of democracy, understood in the liberalist sense, are suddenly being replaced by a dictatorial regime founded upon almost unlimited coercion. This is what the anthropocentric humanism’s ambition to grant man unparalleled freedom has led to.
