If you thought the preliminary 5% exit polls last night were a disaster for the CDU... well, it actually got worse. The party scraped together a pathetic 4.89% in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, failing to enter a state parliament for the first time in post-war German history. This spectacular implosion comes just weeks after the AfD halved the CDU’s vote share in Saxony-Anhalt.
At the helm of this sinking ship is Chancellor Merz, the very definition of a lame duck.

Merz has defiantly refused to step down. But let’s be clear, a government led by a party that just erased itself from a state map, and propped up by a coalition partner (SPD) actively planning its post-Merz future, is a zombie administration. In a democratic country, a leader with single-digit approval ratings and a hollowed-out mandate would have already tendered their resignation. But in "post democratic" Germany, Merz insisted he would continue to push through his reform agenda:
These reforms are the antidote to the poison of authoritarianism. What needs to be done now requires backbone, steadfastness, and patience. I will demonstrate these qualities as chairman of the CDU and, above all, as chancellor of our country. By "poison of authoritarianism" he likely hinted at Russia, a country led by a president whose domestic approval ratings consistently hover above 80%, and whose party, United Russia, continues to secure overwhelming supermajorities in both presidential and parliamentary elections. @LauraRuHK
