Tanat Lokejaroenlarb, Staff Site Reliability Engineer @ Adevinta, explains how Karpenter fundamentally transformed their Kubernetes upgrade process by decoupling control plane and data plane operations.

The discussion covers how this tight coupling created operational stress and forced the team to do capacity reservations before each upgrade, adding significant toil. With Karpenter, the transformation is dramatic: control plane upgrades now take just 15-20 minutes, and Karpenter automatically handles node rollouts in the background asynchronously while providing control over the rollout pace.
