Have you ever had an idea that you genuinely cared about, even though no one asked you to work on it?

A passion project is something you choose to work on because you are genuinely interested in it.

It can be almost anything: a social initiative, research, an app, a creative project, a community, or an idea you want to bring to life.

The key difference is simple:

No one assigned it to you. You chose it yourself.

You decide what to create, why it matters, and how far you want to take it.

You know how sometimes someone drops a question in the group chat like, “Who’s going to make the presentation?” and then… silence😅
Everyone sees the message, but no one answers. And it’s not because everyone is lazy or doesn’t care — people just think, “Someone else will probably do it.🫣

This isn’t really about being indifferent. It’s about psychology. And there’s a scientific explanation for it.🤩

What Darley and Latané Found

In 1968, psychologists John Darley and Bibb Latané conducted a study on why people sometimes don’t help in an emergency, even when they can see that someone is in trouble. Their study was called
🍊Bystander Intervention in Emergencies: Diffusion of Responsibility.🍊

They created a situation where one person, an actor, appeared to be having a medical emergency while other people — the participants in the experiment — were nearby. And they found something pretty surprising:

🕶When there was only one witness, they helped in 85% of cases.
🕶With two witnesses, the rate dropped to 62%.
🕶With five witnesses, it dropped to just 31%.

The more people are around, the less personally responsible each person feels. This is called diffusion of responsibility. The basic idea is simple: “Someone else will definitely help.”

How It Works in Everyday Life

📚At school. In a group project, everyone might agree to “do it together,” but then nothing gets done because everyone is waiting for someone else to take the initiative. But when the teacher says, “Masha, you’re doing the introduction, and Petya, you’re analyzing the data,” the project actually starts moving forward. A specific task assigned to a specific person creates real responsibility.

🟫This principle is especially useful for school projects: it’s better to assign roles right away instead of wasting time wondering, “Okay, but who’s going to start?”

🩸At work. A manager might post in a group chat, “We need someone to check this report ASAP.” And then… silence. But if they say, “Lena, could you please check the numbers in section 3?” the task gets done quickly.

🤩In teams. The same thing applies to sports teams, creative groups, and volunteer organizations. When responsibilities are clearly divided, teams tend to work more effectively.

What Can We Do About It?🤩

🕶Assign specific people to tasks. Instead of saying “someone should do it,” say, “Could you please take care of this?”
🕶Break big tasks into small, specific ones. Instead of “prepare the project,” say, “Find some sources by Wednesday” or “Write a first draft of the introduction by Friday.”
🕶Make expectations clear. Sometimes people don’t take action simply because they aren’t sure whether something is actually their responsibility.
