I was talking to someone sharp yesterday, and during a discussion on biases he was genuinely surprised by one idea: that cognitive biases aren’t flaws - they’re the default.
He asked, “Then why do people try so hard to eliminate them?”
The answer is pretty simple. People don’t like facing how non-rational and imperfect we actually are.
What we see now - this push to “remove bias” - is a bit misguided. Bias isn’t a bug in the system; it is the system. Trying to fully get rid of it is both unrealistic and, honestly, a bit ironic.
You can’t unbias a human. You can only understand the biases and work with them.
