May 9th is Victory Day. On this day in 1945, the Soviet Union defeated Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945). Over 27 million Soviet people — soldiers and civilians — lost their lives.

On May 9th, Russians remember their ancestors, thank veterans, and say: “Thank you for the Victory!” Main traditions include the military parade on Red Square, a minute of silence, the “Immortal Regiment” march (people carrying photos of their veteran relatives), and a festive fireworks display.

It’s a day of remembrance, grief, and immense pride.
