In his first year, Johan learned the language, embraced new adventures, and immersed himself in Russian culture. He also made friends through ITMO’s Buddy System and brought a taste of Latin America to St. Petersburg by helping organize campus events such as Latin American Night.
Johan also told us what it was like to experience his first winter in St. Petersburg:
“In Mexico, I was used to temperatures of around 30°C, while here I experienced temperatures as low as -20°C. Of course, that’s a huge difference, but I don’t think the weather is something students should be afraid of. You have to adapt and buy the right clothes, but winter here can also be really beautiful.”
