📌 Tehran, IRNA - Vice President and Head of the Department of Environment Shina Ansari has said that documented reports on the damage inflicted on the country’s environment—including the release of pollutants, harm to biodiversity, and destruction of natural and wetland habitats—have been prepared and will be used at international environmental summits for legal pursuit.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the “Ecocide: The Silent War Crime” conference on Sunday, Ansari said the purpose of holding this conference was to examine the environmental damage and hazards caused by the aggressions against the country in the 12-day war and the third imposed war, and to compile documentation related to these damages.
She noted that the documented reports have been prepared in written form and can serve as a prelude to raising the issue at the upcoming important environmental summit in Turkey, which will focus on climate change.
Ansari described the explosion of fuel tanks in Tehran and Karaj and damage to petrochemical facilities and Assaluyeh as important examples of environmental damage caused by war.
Global efforts to combat climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce carbon footprint can be disrupted in the event of aggressions and actions contrary to international rules, and the effects of these actions extend beyond geographical borders, she stressed.
Referring to the US withdrawal from some environmental agreements, including those related to climate change, Ansari said even so, we must keep pushing to raise the issue and make our voice heard worldwide.
Elsewhere in her remarks, referring to the summit of Caspian Sea littoral states in Turkmenistan with the presence of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Ansari said that one of the central topics of this summit was the decline in the Caspian Sea level and its consequences for the ecosystem of this sea; an issue that necessitates cooperation among all five coastal countries.
Despite the US withdrawal from a number of environmental agreements, Ansari reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran will participate at the highest level in the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Turkey.
Increasing support and strengthening international cooperation for the protection of endangered species, both animal and plant, will be addressed at the event, she said.
