📌 Tehran, IRNA – The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and the Ministry of Health have signed an agreement to use nuclear technology to control disease-carrying mosquitoes, including the Aedes aegypti species.
AEOI Chief Mohammad Eslami and Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarghandi signed the agreement on Sunday to expand the use of nuclear technology in healthcare.
Under the agreement, the two sides will establish a facility for mass-rearing sterile male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and conduct laboratory and field trials to assess the effectiveness of the technology.
The method involves using radiation to sterilize male mosquitoes before releasing them into targeted areas to reduce successful reproduction and gradually suppress mosquito populations.
The AEOI will support the project by providing gamma or X-ray irradiation equipment, training personnel, supplying specialists in irradiation and dosimetry, and ensuring the proper operation and maintenance of the equipment.
