๐ Tehran, IRNA โ Demonstrators in Athens and Thessaloniki have staged anti-war rallies to protest US policies and the expansion of military cooperation between Greece and the United States as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited the country.
According to the Greek website Parapolitika, the protests began Tuesday evening at Syntagma Square and the Propylaea in Athens, organized by student unions, labor organizations, and political parties opposed to Rubioโs visit.
โ
The Athens rally began at 7 p.m. local time, with protesters planning to march toward the US Embassy. Greek traffic police imposed a series of restrictions and traffic measures in central Athens amid the demonstrations and Rubioโs presence in the country.
โ
Dimitris Koutsoumbas, secretary general of the Communist Party of Greece, told protesters at Syntagma Square that the people of Greece cannot take it anymore.
โ
The Greek people have paid a heavy price all these years because of the strategic agreement with the United States, from energy poverty and the skyrocketing cost of living to heavy taxation and huge military expenditures that have no defensive purpose for our country, he said.
โ
Koutsoumbas added that Greece had been drawn into wars and that the country was filled with deadly US military bases.
