⚖️ Turn a MacBook into a scale

ℹ️ There is an app that lets the users weigh anything right on the laptop's trackpad. It was tested with a load of up to 3.5 kg – the result is almost as accurate as a kitchen scale. The only inconvenience, you need to hold your finger on the trackpad before weighing.

🧑‍💻 More info is here.

🧲 Apple announced a new commitment of $500 million with MP Materials

📰 Apple will purchase American rare earth magnets developed at the MP Materials plant in Texas. The companies will also establish a rare earth processing line in California and develop new magnetic materials and technologies.

🧲 The Texas plant will be equipped with production lines for neodymium magnets for Apple products, enabling MP Materials to increase production.

♻️ The new recycling plant in California will enable MP Materials to recycle rare earth raw materials, including electronic waste, for use in Apple products.

ℹ️ Apple first used recycled rare earth elements in the iPhone 11 in 2019. Today, nearly all magnets in Apple devices are made from 100% recycled rare earth elements. The collaboration with MP Materials will strengthen domestic supply and promote environmentally friendly recycling practices.

📆 The iPhone 17 is expected to be unveiled during the week of September 8-14

📰 The most likely date is September 9 or 10, according to Bloomberg. The event will showcase a lineup of four iPhone 17 models, the latest Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3, and possibly SE 3.

🐌 The new MacBook Pro with the M5 chip may be postponed until January. At the same time, the iPad Pro M5 will still be released in the fall of 2025 — the tablet will again be the first to receive the latest M-series processor, as it was a year earlier.

🤷‍♂️ AirTag 2, AirPods Pro 3, and the updated version of Vision Pro with a more powerful chip may also be announced in September, but there is no exact information about these new products yet.

#AppleEvent @iPhone

Apple is preparing to launch its next Vision Pro headset as early as this year,

according to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

🧠 The main innovation inside is the M4 chip, which will be significantly more powerful than the M2 in the first gen and will add Apple Intelligence support.

🥽 Also, according to rumors, Apple is going to focus on comfort. The dimensions and weight of the device will remain unchanged, as the previous design will be retained, but Apple will redesign the strap system to make the Vision Pro more comfortable to wear on the head.

👂 By the way, Apple is currently working on a completely new model of mixed reality headset with significantly reduced weight (currently ~600 grams). The preliminary launch window is 2027, but the company's plans may change and the timing may be pushed back.

At the same time, Apple is developing a low-latency wired headset designed for corporate applications. The company was also working on glasses that connect to a Mac and could serve as a virtual monitor, but suspended work on the project several months ago.

📰 Apple has acquired two startups for Vision Pro and Apple Intelligence

1️⃣ TrueMeeting allows users to scan their faces with an iPhone and create an avatar image using AI. The company's official website was shut down in the winter, which hints at the startup's acquisition during that period, although the deal was not officially announced, the information became available from regulatory filings in the EU. TrueMeeting's CommonGround Human AI technology creates a “hyper-realistic digital twin” of the user, which could be implemented in the new version of Persona in visionOS, which was unveiled at WWDC on June 9.

2️⃣ WhyLabs monitors large AI language models and prevents them from hallucinating. It does this by tracking how the neural network's reasoning flow and results “drift” and recording performance degradation. This appears to have been acquired specifically for the development of Apple Intelligence and Apple's upcoming proprietary LLM models. No official announcement has been made about the deal, although the company's website is still operational.
