What will happen to .ton now?
Pavel Durov announced that Telegram has applied to ICANN for its own domain zone, .gram. If approved, Telegram usernames could take on the familiar form of regular domains: for example, @palette → palette.gram.
This raises another question: what will happen to .ton domains?
Formally, Telegram never sold them; they are a product of TON DNS. Unlike usernames, Telegram has no particular reason to support or develop this domain zone after the introduction of its own .gram.
So, it's possible that .ton will gradually lose its relevance. 🏥
I decided to investigate who actually profited from the sale of all these .ton domains. It turns out, no one did.
After the auction concludes, the winning bid is sent to the TON DNS collection contract. Currently, about 7.75M GRAM is accumulated there, and there is no function to withdraw funds from the contract.
This might be why ton domains don't interest Telegram, and a new way to profit from usernames, where all the revenue goes to Durov, needs to be devised. 😂
