💡 Instagram Limits Reach for Undisclosed AI Profiles

Instagram announced Monday that it will limit the reach of accounts featuring AI-generated people without disclosing it.
It is renaming its “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile.” Instagram says using the label will not penalize creators.

A Wired investigation found more than two dozen apparently AI-generated male influencer accounts promoting dating app Goose. Some reportedly contacted potential users by direct message.
The New York Times reported finding hundreds of AI-generated doctors, healers, and wellness personalities promoting supplements or making health claims.

➡️ Likeness backlash
The change follows backlash over a Meta AI tool that generated images using other people’s likenesses. Meta removed it after users objected to their public Instagram content being used without explicit opt-in.

Profiles featuring people generated or substantially created with AI should use Instagram’s new label. AI-assisted edits, captions, graphics, and similar creative changes are not included.

For creators, failing to disclose may reduce reach, while applying the label is not itself supposed to trigger a penalty. For users, the change is intended to make AI profiles clearer.
