Australia is enforcing a rule that bans under‑16s from Instagram, and Meta is using an AI age-verification system to enforce it.

Users near the cutoff may need a video selfie or ID. Adults pass easily, but younger teens are blocked, showing the system isn’t perfect and can make mistakes, especially for those close to 16 or from minority groups. The ban starts 10 December 2025, deactivating accounts of under‑16s and stopping new sign-ups.
